General Recommendations

Here at California Coastal Cardiology we make every effort to provide our patients with the knowledge necessary to improve their health and lifestyle. We strongly believe in preventative medicine and take great pride in partnering with our patients so that they may live longer, healthier lives. Education is the key to accomplishing this goal.

ALCOHOL

There is some data suggesting a low amount of alcohol in the diet may be beneficial in raising the good cholesterol as well as cardiovascular health in general.

BLOOD PRESSURE

Your blood pressure should be less than 130/85 with a target of 120/80.

CHOLESTEROL

If no history of heart disease:
LDL should less than 130 with 100 being optimal

If other risk factors for heart disease (smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, family history):
LDL should be less than 100

If documented heart disease (history of heart attack, stents, angioplasty or bypass surgery):
LDL should be less than 70

HDL in Men:
Should be greater than 40

HDL in Women:
Should be greater than 50

EXERCISE

It is generally recommended that you exercise four days per week (aerobic to increase heart rate) for 30 to 40 minutes each.

VITAMINS

There is no good consensus on the merits of vitamin usage at the present time, other than perhaps a daily multi-vitamin. There are proven benefits of fish oil capsules in the lowering of a component of your lipid profile known as triglycerides.
